Healthy lifestyle helps body's cells fight ageing: Scientists

Healthy lifestyle helps body's cells fight ageing: Scientists

Scientists says strategy is structured around a whole-food‚ plant-based diet‚ moderate daily exercise‚ yoga-based relaxation.

radio
Scientists said that they had proof
that a healthy lifestyle helps the
body's cells fight ageing.
They said that the strategy is
structured around a whole-food‚
 plant-based diet‚ moderate daily
 exercise‚ yoga-based relaxation
 and stress management.
The researcher said that the
implications of this relatively
small pilot study may go beyond
men with prostate cancer.
If validated by large-scale
randomized controlled trials‚ these comprehensive lifestyle changes may significantly reduce the
risk of a wide variety of diseases and premature mortality.

Sleep boosts brain cell numbers

Sleep boosts brain cell numbers

In contrast‚ the genes involved in cell death and stress
responses were turned on when the mice were forced to
stay awake.
radio
Scientists believe that
 they have discovered
a new reason why we
need to sleep it replenishes
 a type of brain cell.
Dr Chiara Cirelli and
colleagues from the
University of Wisconsin
 found that the production
 rate of the myelin making
 cells‚ immature
oligodendrocytes‚ doubled
 as mice slept.
The increase was most marked during the type of sleep that is associated with
dreaming - REM or rapid eye movement sleep - and was driven by genes.
In contrast‚ the genes involved in cell death and stress responses were turned on when the
mice were forced to stay awake.
Dr Cirelli said that for a long time‚ sleep researchers focused on how the activity of nerve
cells differs when animals are awake versus when they are asleep.

Green tea extract kills childhood cancers

Green tea extract kills childhood cancers
Cancer researcher says a modified antioxidant called catechin can kill
50 per cent of cells from neuroblastoma cancers within 3 days in
laboratory studies.
radio
A green-tea extract could help
destroy deadly childhood cancers
that are resistant to traditional
chemotherapy.
Cancer researcher Orazio Vittorio
said that a modified antioxidant
called catechin
can kill 50 per cent of the cells from
neuroblastoma cancers within 3 days in
laboratory studies.
Neuroblastoma is the most common
cancer to strike infants‚ and has the
lowest
survival rate of all childhood cancers.
Catechin‚ extracted from green tea‚ is thought to be a promising cancer treatment‚ but its instability
when it enters the body limits its effectiveness.
Dr Vittorio‚ from the Children's Cancer Institute Australia and the Lowy cancer research center at
UNSW said that the modified form of catechin is effective at destroying neuroblastoma cells that are
highly resistant to conventional chemotherapy.
