Green tea extract kills childhood cancers

Green tea extract kills childhood cancers

A green-tea extract could help
destroy deadly childhood cancers
that are resistant to traditional
chemotherapy.
Cancer researcher Orazio Vittorio
said that a modified antioxidant
called catechin
can kill 50 per cent of the cells from
neuroblastoma cancers within 3 days in
laboratory studies.
Neuroblastoma is the most common
cancer to strike infants‚ and has the
lowest
survival rate of all childhood cancers.
Catechin‚ extracted from green tea‚ is thought to be a promising cancer treatment‚ but its instability
when it enters the body limits its effectiveness.
Dr Vittorio‚ from the Children's Cancer Institute Australia and the Lowy cancer research center at
UNSW said that the modified form of catechin is effective at destroying neuroblastoma cells that are
highly resistant to conventional chemotherapy.

Scientists find clue to age-related memory loss

Scientists find clue to age-related memory loss
Experiments on mice suggested low levels of a protein in the brain
may be responsible for memory loss.

A clue to why memory deteriorates with age has been found by US
 researchers.
Experiments on mice suggested low levels of a protein in the brain
may be responsible for memory loss.
It is hoped the discovery could lead to treatments to reverse
forgetfulness‚ but it is a big leap from the mouse to a human brain.
The team at Columbia University Medical Centre started by analysing
the brains of eight dead people‚ aged between 22 and 88‚ who had
donated their organ for medical research.
